Last night,
Bill (aka
@Culturedude),
Susan (aka
@Culturebabe), and myself were all on Twitter, finishing off the last of the wine
basket that
Joni sent on Friday to cheer me up after a rough week.
The phone rang, I jumped up and said, "I'll be back," and darted upstairs to take the call. It was
Kat Cole, one of my favorite people in the world and who just happens to be a Vice President for
Hooters Restaurants, as well as a widely-sought Communications & Leadership speaker and consultant. Yesterday, in a DM on
Twitter, I told her that this would be a great night to catch up.
I couldn't wait to hear about her trip to
Rwanda. Seriously, If you haven't read her
blog and
read about her trip, do that right
now.
We talked about the work she did and what she experienced on her journey to South Africa and Rwanda, we talked about life and me wanting to live
somewhere warm, and we talked about our excitement and plans for
TR Live. It was the most inspiring call of my day. I hung up the phone, and thought about how lucky I was to have so many amazing people in my life. Amazing people that do things like send me wine baskets and call and inspire me to keep the candle burning by sharing and caring.
I came back downstairs and I noticed
Susan re-tweeting me. She gets a huge smile on her face as she reads a message on
Facebook from a long lost friend. She shares it with Bill and I. I can't help but smile, because she's getting this down and she's come along way since initially being
scared of blogging. In fact, for her it's been one year, four months, 26 blog posts and 143 tweets since that time.
I divide the last of the wine equally between our glasses, and we smile at each other. I sit back down in front of my Mac and see many familiar smiles, including Kat's, on my
Tweetdeck. In that moment I'm once again reminded that the greatest benefit we received from Social Media goes far beyond simply building our brand or executing business results.
It let's us foster relationships with, keeps us connected, and brings us closer to some of the most amazing people on the planet.
That type of ROI is priceless..
