Porn and Pancakes. The Gap Between Personal and Business Innovations.

  • Rating: 5 after 2 votes

Yes. The sign you see in that picture says, “Porn and Pancakes."

That picture was taken at my church, Southbrook, in Dayton. They are advertising a breakfast where they’ll be discussing the dangers of porn addiction. If you visit their website, you can download Internet accountability software and pair up with online “support buddies." No, I didn’t attend the breakfast. But, I was pretty curious after seeing the XXX.Church.com sign in our foyer. Seth Godin would call it a “Purple Cow" something certainly remarkable.

This church is pretty progressive. On their website, you can listen to podcasts of previous sermons, interact in their online community and engage in blog posts. They are way more innovative than 90% of the businesses in our industry.

What did I realize in church that Sunday?

There is a huge gap between the innovations taking place in our personal lives and those taking place at work.

Social Networks, Ebay, TiVo, YouTube, iPhone applications, gaming. I campaigned during the last election almost exclusively from my laptop and cell phone. I get to watch my cousin, who lives 2,000 miles away, grow up online. Last night, I got caught up on American Idol where, later tonight, we’ll be selecting a winner by texting our votes.

So why are our workplaces so far behind? Why haven’t they already leveraged new innovations for better businesses and workplaces?

Fear? Fear of losing the control? “What if someone says something bad about us?” Guess what. "Tool tools of social media reach beyond corporate transparency to make any business the star of a 24/7 reality show" - Brand For Talent. Whether you like it or not, your brand is on stage naked, kind of. You may choose not to engage and forbid your employees to play, BUT you won't stop your customers from talking. They will and they are. Are you listening?

The best part about Web 2.0 is the transparency. Which means IT IS our “Internet accountability” software. The best companies will shine and be given the credit they deserve and the worst will have to face their imperfections.

Get over it, quit hiding and looking for reasons to not get involved. Get a good social media policy in place and get engaged - even if it just by listening.

Before it's too late and you find yourself business caught somewhere between porn and pancakes.

Great stuff. To go further on a point that you touched on, even if you think your business isn't a part of social media, it is. People are going to talk about you. If you were walking down the street and you heard someone loudly complaining about their experience in your restaurant, chances are you would introduce yourself and try to resolve the issue. If you aren't in touch with social media you're just walking by with your fingers in your ears.

Oh yes i need to get the schematics for building a rope bridge. Sorta like the one from Shrek really long and shaky but sturdy for the trek across. I have found my way navigating through the workplace and uncovering and building some of the bridges with groups that most definitely should be collaborating. And me, me talking from my position in the company that resembles the totem pole (can we still use that?) you know where the bottom face has the grass growing up over the nose. That is where I sit in the hierarchical stratified company.

I keep saying Company no names to protect the innocent. I am sure couple of google searches you can find out, but we will leave it for the dig dug society (which is all of us). I have personally taken on the challenge to break the cycle of hierarchical dominance. it is so 90's and unproductive. The advice I got and then I give to others is build coalitions by conversations not presentations! Thanks @jkrohrs ! So if anyone has the partnerships I need blueprints, rope maker, knot maker, board inserter, post putter in the ground, rock climber. See all new titles for collaborating. You should see the slides I carry with me for how, who, and what the Business Social Media Technology group would be chartered with when I get my opportunity to charter the ship! Pretty bold statement hey. Well if I am discovered out here I will surely need your services Amande, so I have to keep moving don’t tell anyone I was here….there is no record I was here right? I will have my people reach out to your people for our next meet and greet. Back to the Pulling Tin HQ’s bunker!

Love the hard core honesty of your post.....most compelling point to me was "you will not stop your customers from talking. they will and they are" YES, so jump in and be part of the conversation, gain their trust, loyalty, and respect!

Amanda-
Fantastic post !
I attended a similar church when I was in Columbia MO.
I think the new buzz word is "Mega Church".

There's a place outside of Oklahoma City called Church TV, where there are different "branches" and they come to a chapel and see the satellite of the minister giving his sermon, music playing etc.

As to the topic of your post, I think some in the business world still feel that social media is way
ahead of its time; even the name "social media" to some of the "stodgy" corporate types seems unprofessional, to a degree.

Seems to be what i've been understanding.

I talked with someone a few months ago, who told me that if they didn't get on to the social media bandwagon before long, they will miss out on tons of business.

People forget, too, there are many more options in the social media arena, than Facebook and Myspace.

FohBoh and Talent Revolution are two that come to mind. (grin).

Again, great job (as usual). Keith

Fabulous post Amanda! (Wow, do you have a very cool, progressive church!)

It's funny, but I look at all the great talent out there that could be leveraged virtually - yet only those companies that embrace the technology will get their hands on those superstars.

I ditto your desire to see the gap close - this stuff is too good not to use in the workplace!

I loved this:

"Whether you like it or not, your brand is on stage naked, kind of."

It made me feel uncomfortable, in all the right ways. Awesome way to put it out there.

And now I want pancakes. It's possible I'm not getting enough church in my diet.

Keep 'em coming, girl.

I once had the privilege of working with a small business visionary who wanted technology and what's hot to rule supreme. We built some amazing stuff but at the same time we fell victim to this very dilemma. Even the people buying the product wanted the business to be "not as cool" as everything they did at home.
Until we can get everyone to understand the fun stuff CAN BE the serious stuff too, we are going to keep running into the brick and mortar wall head first.

The GAP will be filled in my lifetime and I'll do my part to make sure I am part of the reason!
