I want to hear from you about what things the Leaders (Managers, Teachers, Parents) in your life do that inspire you? What things do they do that demotivate you?
Knowing that I am the cusp between Gen X and Gen Y, I appreciate that my superiors don't limit my creativity. How many people can blog, reply to discussions on SNs during their work day and not get into trouble???
I appreciate knowing that I am connecting with people, getting ideas, and also getting third party opinions on things that will absolutely impact my daily influence on my company.
Their flexibility has allowed me to make strides in several of my projects while still maintaining all those daily tasks that must be done.
I know they don't quite 'get it' when it comes to the whole SN thing, but they are open minded and ask questions about what topics are hot? who have you seen from___? did you get any feedback on___?
Its great! This is also allowing me to connect better with our Associates when I am in the field working with them. Win Win for Everyone.
Amanda, I'm glad you're in my circle of friends you are appear to be such a go getter and have alot of talent. Your leadership is smart for letting you live outside your box! Our industry is just on the surface of the power of SN. Imagine if your whole team (company) was connected the work that could get accomplished online etc... I am working now on my parting gift to T&K and it is definately cutting edge!
I will keep it simple with one mere thought (since I am unable to fully elaborate right now)... LEAD BY EXAMPLE.
Don't worry, I shall add more later...
Let's see....the things I love about my fearless leader, Amanda Hite.....She truly cares about me and the rest of the team, she encourages us to get out of our comfort zone and always makes us strive to do more. She leads by example, she is a people person and is a great role model. She also brings energy into the office every day (that she is there....ha ha).
What don't I like about her.....the fact that she is leaving!!!
I love what I can learn from the leaders in my life.
Seeing the traits in them, that I fear are in me - that's what sucks. Yet it gives me insight as well, and I can see more clearly what I have to work on - whether it is simply fear or whether there is a bit of "mirror" action going on.
What I don't love about my immediate supervisor is that he doesn't understand that there is a difference between Leading and Managing. One manages tasks and Leads people.
What I like about him is that he is learning to let people below him make mistakes and that it will not neccessarily reflect poorly on him. He is becoming open to communication and learning that he isn't the only one who knows how to get things done.
What can really create mutual respect and bonding within a team is when your leader goes into bat on your behalf - knowing that it may not be in his/her own best interests in the short term but is in the greater interests of most in the longer.
I love that the leaders in my current position trust me with tasks and responsibilities that are new to me and sometimes out of my comfort zone. They empower me and I appreciate it. What I think can be done better is for them to see that I am not them. Everyone is different, if you want something done a specific way, then you need to give them specific instructions. I fear that there is a generational gap and the 'old school' doesn't appreciate the 'new school's' outside of the box thinking.
Mixed blessings here: Currently my direct report (GM) is old school (in all the worst ways), if his expectations are to lead by example then I assume I can do the following; Never listen, dismiss others who have new ideas, speak in a gruff manner, take credit for everything and throw people under the bus. As a plus, he does leave me to do everything without interference (guess he does know how to get things done :)
Everything is not terrible however, as his direct report is the Board of Directors and the Board President; captains of industry and leaders all-they are not afraid to admit a hiring mistake and will find a new leader with better qualities.
Fortunate that I have seen managers come and go, bringing with them their own unique style. Some have been the kind of leaders everyone would love to work with and some not so much.
The positive is that you learn from them all.
Leaders who are patient, kind, uplifting when they share areas where I can grow are the leaders I will respond to positively. I have worked for many leaders/managers in the past and it is the leaders who lead by fear and intimidation that make me sick. They suck all my "desire to be my best" out of me. They make me want to run in the opposite direction. I am very open to hear how I can be better at my job and how I can become a stronger leader. Criticism has never bothered me, I consider it a necessity to be able to continue to grow and learn. After all no one is perfect! But it's the METHOD in which a leader chooses to share what the "areas of improvement" are that will either tear down or build up a person! I want to be a leader who builds up my team and inspires them to be all that they can be and were created to be! I want to bring out the gifts and talents each individual on my team has and help them develop them!
